In today's context of globalisation, the cultural heritage domain is gaining considerable significance, since it reflects the multitude of identities that make Europe so unique in its diversity. This general idea and my personal interest in matters of art and culture have incited me to investigate into the field of cultural heritage. The object of my research is the cultural objectives and cultural heritage policy of the Council of Europe and the European Community and their implementation in Flanders. Before concentrating on the concrete and practical projects in Flanders, it is important to sketch a theoretical framework serving as a clearly described background against which the various initiatives can be placed.
