San Sebastián City Council, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and the Basque Government have today signed a partnership agreement to jointly work together in the candidature process.
Donostia-San Sebastián City Council, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council and the Basque Government believe that Donostia-San Sebastián's bid to be named the European Cultural Capital in 2016 is an opportunity to boost new cultural facilities in Donostia-San Sebastián and Gipuzkoa, consolidate the cultural strategy of the bid territory and showcase the image of Donostia-San Sebastián and the Basque Country in Spain and Europe.
The agreement, which will remain in force for the next two years, complies with one of the basic criteria for the cities hoping to be named the cultural capital:
The three authorities all agree that the project will lead to interinstitutional and collective reflection about the role of the provincial capital and the province in a European and transnational sphere.
The agreement also considers the need for the commitment and joint support of economic, social and cultural players, together with the representation of the partner cities to ensure a successful outcome.
