Travelling Exhibition “25 years European Capitals of Culture” 25 years, 42 + 12 cities – figures for a success story! Europe comes together and the cities in Europe with their inhabitants play a predominant role in this process. 42 + 12, which means 42 Cultural Capitals and 12 Cities of the Cultural Month, thousands of artists, thousands of volunteers who support the activities, not to forget all the institutions and administrations –it is those who deserve praise and gratitude! Melina Mercouri, aligned by colleagues from several countries gave life to this initiative in 1985 with the first programs in Athens. Through this modest exhibition we want to recall and demonstrate the most valuable events all over Europe. This initiative found and still finds more and more attractiveness, because it is evident: Being a European Capital of Culture serves the cultural life and structure in this city, it helps the development of the city on a large scale: economics, tourism, the arts, the civil society and more. And it helps building Europe: our continent as a home of the arts and as a part of the world where we can live together in peace. Exhibition owner: City of Athens Mission: To be sent to cities and organizations in order to present the various cultural contributions of the most important EU-Cultural-Policy-institution to the cities and of the cities to the institution in several fields (such as art, publications, cultural management, construction infrastructure, creation of institutions etc), on the occasion of conferences and events, and also to promote the Athens Documentation Centre of Capitals of Culture, created by the Cultural Organization of the City of Athens, which provides the material for the exhibition. First planned Exhibitions: 23, 24 March 2010 in Brussels on the occasion of the symposium of the European Commission for the 25 years of the institution. The constructors of the exhibition determine the content of these technical specifications.
Philosophy and content of the Exhibition Based on the concept elaborated by Joerg Ingo Weber and Rodolfo Maslias for the Network of European Cultural Capitals and Months in (ECCM) in 2005, the exhibition will not be comparative, evaluational or chronological, but subject oriented. It will present the most significant achievements of the first 25 years accompanied by photos, audiovisual and digital material divided into ten categories (arts, infrastructure, social programmes etc.) Each city will be presented in at least one of the abovementioned categories. The material will be selected by the Athens Documentation Center under the supervision and with the cooperation of Joerg-Ingo Weber and Rodolfo Maslias (permanent advisors). Main Technical Specifications The exhibition will consist of 10 double sided boards, each with its own lighting that could be installed and arranged in various ways depending on the size of the exhibition space. It will also consist of one or two screens and the necessary material for the presentation of the audiovisual material from about 60 Capitals of Culture during the first 25 years of the institution. Photos of the events as well as the cities’ mottos and messages will highlight the importance of the cultural events or other achievements (i.e. statistical data, press articles, statements by officials etc.). The exhibition can be easily installed (technical instructions will be provided in the package). The exhibition material will be stowed in a reusable small size case-box made of hard-wearing material and the reparation of any damages will be included in the conditions of the agreement with the constructors.
