The program is divided up into three sections. Weimar, Site of European Thought will present projects which will seek and reflect the contemporary European context of Weimar’s historical, artistic and intellectual symbols and memorials, the interaction of Weimar with Europe.

Weimar, Stage for European Rehearsal and Performance is an opportunity for the city to reflect upon itself and its identity as a host and a site for cultural activity. A campus of artistic possibilities will be the launching pad for far-reaching cooperation of international and regional activities abounding with experimental levity and artistic tenacity. Weimar and surroundings will become a European network offering culture and communication, joint enterprise, accommodations, entertainment, and interested attention –no holds barred.

In the European Cultural Region of Thüringen the geographic surroundings of Weimar will be presented with their long cultural tradition and their accessibility and modernity as a center of European innovation at the close of our century. Weimar and its region are bonded by the past and by the present in many ways. These ties will be demonstrated by numerous projects and events in the course of the City of Culture Year.

The projects presented in Weimar, Site of European Thought, are based on the artistic associations of Weeimar's past and present, extending the impetus of the City of Culture to the European horizons. The programme presumes that various forms of artistic expression will bring the ideas to life , making them a physical joy and a spiritual pleasure to experience.
